An estimated 10,000 hackers will convene at the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas this weekend for DEF CON 19, one of the largest and oldest hacker conventions out there.
DEF CON is where hackers from around the world meet to show off their skills, compete in hacking games and competitions, take in workshops and speaker series, or get together at one of the many social events. The most popular of the hacking competitions is Capture the Flag, where hackers work in teams to attack and defend computers and networks.
Hackers also have a chance for some hands-on experience with hardware and software, and have access to some of the brightest and most interesting minds in the field. Speakers at this year’s convention will present on topics including ‘Bosses love Excel, Hackers too’, ‘Security When Nano Seconds Count’, and ‘Chip & PIN is Definitely Broken’.
The conference explores more than computer security, delving into topics like the vulnerability of Point of Sale machines and ATMs, automobile communication data and entertainment systems, and cellular privacy.
DEF CON goers aren’t just people who hack for fun. The thousands of attendees include security researchers, computer security professionals, journalists, government employees, and hackers who have been hired by major corporations to test their security systems.
The DEF CON community heavily scrutinizes and questions the myriad of security systems we have in place, including everything from internet security to mobile connections and home security systems.
As a leader in information security and online privacy, eCrypt Technologies Inc. is pleased to have a special representative on the ground at DEF CON 19. Our connection to the DEF CON community is extremely important. It gives us an inside look into the industry and allows us to continually improve our technology, and, in turn, better protect eCrypt users against cyber-attacks.
